The Silver Surfer: Who is the Herald of Galactus?

Surfing With the Alien

Silver Surfer:Where soars the Silver Surfer, there he must soar alone!”

The silver surfer #1

A man flies through space. The infinite void leaves him time to think. He sees worlds scorched by a supernova. Black holes that light cannot escape from. Nebulas swirling together into beautiful displays. So much wonder and horror, but nothing that can assuage his guilt

The man finds a blue-green planet, the third of eight orbiting a yellow star. He soars around the world, witnessing hundreds of cultures and billions of lives weaving a never-ending story that he must end. The man unleashes a surge of power, signaling his master galaxies away. He has found his master’s next meal. The Silver Surfer descends, heralding news of humanity’s doom.

The Silver Surfer is Marvel’s most introspective hero. He began as an enslaved villain and has grown into a cosmic champion. So who is he? Where did he come from? What’s the deal with the surfboard? Let’s find out.

Herald of the End: The Silver Surfer’s Backstory

Silver Surfer:Galactus is coming. I have heard the lamentations of worlds… yet if there are three more horrifying words in any corner of the cosmos, I’ve not heard them.”

The Mighty Thor #2 (2011)

The Silver Surfer debuted in The Fantastic Four #48 in 1966. He was created by Jack Kirby, who was inspired by surfing culture and outer space, and wrapped a fallen angel archetype around those elements.

Norrin Radd lived on the idyllic world Zenn-La with his lover Shalla-Bal. The technologically advanced world was a peaceful utopia until they were attacked by Galactus, the Devourer of Worlds. Norrin struck a deal with Galactus to save his home and Shalla-Bal. Galactus imbued Norrin with The Power Cosmic, transforming him into the Silver Surfer and commanded his new Herald to find edible worlds.

The Silver Surfer guided Galactus for a century, finding lifeless worlds for the Devourer to consume. He eventually made a mistake and brought Galactus to an inhabited world. The Silver Surfer couldn’t endure the guilt and Galactus showed mercy, suppressing his emotions and memories. The now stoic Norrin began feeding every suitable world to his master.

Platinum Penitence: The Silver Surfer’s History

Silver Surfer: “If we turn from battle because there is little hope of victory, where then would valor be? Let it ever be the goal that stirs us, not the odds.”

Silver Surfer: Parable #2

The Watcher tried hiding Earth from the Silver Surfer, who wasn’t fooled. He signaled Galactus and was defeated by the Fantastic Four. While the heroes battled his master, the Surfer was nursed back to health by their ally, Alicia Masters. Her compassion broke Galactus’ mental suppression, reminding Norrin of Shalla-Bal and causing him to rebel against Galactus.

The Silver Surfer battled Galactus, buying time for Mr. Fantastic to save the world. Galactus accepted his defeat, but trapped Norrin on Earth. The Silver Surfer became a wandering adventurer and joined the Defenders, but eventually found a way to escape.

Norrin returned to Zenn-La and discovered that it had been destroyed while he was enslaved. The Silver Surfer wandered the stars, seeking atonement for his crimes and musing about life between occasional visits to Earth.

Salvation in Silver: The Silver Surfer’s Modern Stories

Dawn:I guess it’s just you, me, and Toomie.
Silver Surfer:Toomie? [looks around] Is that another one of the escapees? Did they leave him behind?”
Dawn:No, I’m talking about your board.
Silver Surfer:You named my board Toomie?
Dawn:No, you did. You said ‘Toomie, my board.’ [Silver Surfer laughs] What?
Silver Surfer:Let’s get you home, Earth girl.

Silver Surfer #3 (2014)

The Silver Surfer was contacted by aliens holding a woman named Dawn Greenwood hostage. They claimed that she was the most important person in his life and ordered him to kill a godlike alien in exchange for her safety. He had no idea who she was, but fought to protect Dawn until she led an uprising against the aliens. Norrin promised to take her home.

He and Dawn travelled the galaxy, her exuberance and curiosity soothing the wandering hero’s soul. They discovered that Dawn had wished on a shooting star for an adventurous life, unaware that he was that star and that the two became mystically bound.

Their travels ended during Secret Wars. As the universe was destroyed, Galactus shielded his former Herald and Dawn in his ship, allowing them to exist into the next universe. Norrin and Dawn spent decades together until she died from old age. He transformed her corpse into a star and sent it to light the darkness, heralding the dawn of a new universe.

To Me, My Board!: The Silver Surfer’s Powers and Personality

Spider-Man:Why the surfboard? I mean, don’t you think it’s kind of, I dunno…hokey?”
Silver Surfer:It is not a surfboard. It is… There is a human phrase that covers it. “Form follows function.” I need no air, no food, no water. I do not need a ship to sustain me. I need only something that will carry me where I must go.”

Silver Surfer Requiem #2

Galactus doesn’t allow weaklings to be his Heralds. The Silver Surfer has superhuman strength, durability, and can fire blasts of cosmic energy. The Power Cosmic grants many other powers, including transmutation, sensing cosmic disturbances, healing, and astral projection.

Speed is the Silver Surfer’s specialty. He can travel faster than light, escape black holes, and once travelled into the future while moving at max speed. The surfboard helps control his speed, responds to mental commands, and can transform into melee weapons.

The Silver Surfer is introspective, often giving himself long soliloquies about life, philosophy, and whatever is troubling him. He mellowed out while travelling with Dawn, assuming a wise mentor and guardian role. In other words, he became Marvel’s version of The Doctor on a surfboard.
