Spoiler: Who is the Multi-Masked Vigilante?

Spoiler Warning

A ninja watches the waterfront. His employer expects The Batman and his disciples to attack tonight’s shipment. He has spent months studying their tactics and has prepared for the battle to come. He jumps a foot in the air as a loud clatter sounds from the warehouse next to him.

“Damn it, thought that was stabl- ohmigosh, ninja!”

A woman dressed in purple armor emerges from the warehouse. The ninja rushes her, anticipating shotokan karate flowing into Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He doesn’t see the spray of mace coming, nor the steel-toed boot slamming into his crotch. Something hard knocks him to the ground. His vision clears just in time to see moonlight reflecting off of a lead pipe. He howls in pain as she brings it down on his shins. She cringes.

“Ah geez, that was probably too much. Uh… Spoiler warning: crime doesn’t pay…? God that was corny, get better soon!”

Spoiler picks up the pipe. She’s still got a gang operation to bust. Maybe not as badly as Mr. Ninja though…

Spoiler is the unsung hero of the Bat-Family. She is the only member to be both Robin and Batgirl, but is often overlooked. So who is she? How did she become a hero? Why doesn’t she stick to her own identity? Let’s find out.

Get a Clue: Spoiler’s Backstory

Spoiler debuted in Detective Comics #647 in 1992. She was created by Chuck Dixon and Tom Lyle as part of their revamp of a forgotten supervillain.

Stephanie Brown was the daughter of a small-time Riddler knock-off called The Cluemaster. He spent much of her childhood in jail or abusing her. When he got out, Steph forced him to promise that he wouldn’t be The Cluemaster again. He agreed, but committed crimes without his costume and gimmick. Steph became a vigilante to take revenge on him as The Spoiler.

Spoiler met Robin shortly into her career. She was adaptive and scrappy enough to impress Robin, joining his mission to stop her dad. They became friends, though Batman was cold to the untrained Spoiler fearing that she would die.

Stephanie learned a handful of secret identities. She dated Robin sometimes. Steph also formed an unlikely friendship with Batgirl Cassandra Cain, her outgoing nature playing off of Cass’ quiet seriousness.

War Games: Spoiler’s History

Spoiler’s life became complicated. A young mother after a one night stand, she gave the baby up for adoption. Stephanie also became Robin when her boyfriend Tim Drake was briefly unable to. She jumped at the chance. Batman was critical of her performance and fired Steph for disobeying an order, forbidding her to become Spoiler as well.

Stephanie wanted to prove herself to Batman and stole one of his plans to take down Gotham City’s underworld. She didn’t know that the plan required one of Bruce’s alter egos to work. As Gotham City plunged into a gang war, Spoiler was tortured to death by Black Mask to obtain the plan.

Batman discovered that one of his allies had faked Spoiler’s death and kidnapped her to teach him a lesson about using child soldiers. He kept the information secret as a tool to control Tim and refused to put up a memorial for the ‘dead’ Spoiler, infuriating his allies. Robin found Stephanie and the two unloaded on Bruce, who apologized for abusing them. She was convinced and returned to crimefighting.

Spoiler’s return was one of many changes that led Cassandra Cain to leave Gotham City. She gave Steph the Batgirl costume and identity, trusting her to live up to the legacy. Stephanie trained under the original Batgirl, Barbara Gordon, and filled several holes in her training. When Cass returned, the three Batgirls agreed to share the identity.

Trifecta: Spoiler’s Powers and Personality

Spoiler has no superpowers, same as the rest of the Bat-Family. Unlike them, she also has much less formal training. Spoiler relies on improvisation, surprising foes, and chutzpah to keep up with more skilled opponents. She is the jack of all trades among the Bats.

As Robin and Batgirl, Spoiler has sampled every bit of the Bat-Family’s tech. She often uses a three-section staff in fights and has Batarangs for ranged foes. Spoiler briefly had a cloaking device that The Penguin gave her, but doesn’t use it regularly.

Stephanie Brown is a spunky brawler and the most stable member of the team. She recognizes tropes that happen in her missions and is quick to make jokes and reference pop culture. Spoiler undervalues her skills and accomplishments by comparing them to other Bats and wants to earn Bruce’s approval.
