Mister Sinister: Who is the Genocidal Geneticist?

Sins of Sinister

Mister Sinister:Visionary. Savior. Madman. It doesn’t matter. I am Sinister.”

X-Men: Hellfire Club #3 (2000)

You wake with a start, pain filling your body. Four clear walls give no privacy to your scarred flesh. How long have you been here? A month? A year? A decade? All you can remember is pain, isolation, and the voice echoing in the darkness. No, don’t think, Don’t wanna, DON’T REMEMB-

“Test 27: Subject’s veins have been injected with sulfuric acid. Post-experiment vivisection reveals that the subject’s regenerative healing factor repaired chemical burns and nerve damage as fast as they occurred. I can definitively say the subject experiences pain.”

“Test 49: Total tooth extraction and regeneration test must be redone. My assistant slipped the subject an anesthetic. They have been disposed of.”

“Test 83: Subject flayed until only the brain and spinal cord remained, then cauterized. Regeneration was slow, but successful. Perfect for my purposes.”

Your eyes fly open. You are restrained by a machine. Needles impale you and drain your blood. And there, his red eyes burning in the darkness, you see your tormenter. This is the end and you welcome it. Anything to escape from Mister Sinister.

Mister Sinister is one of Marvel’s worst villains. His experiments would single-handedly double the Geneva Convention’s length. So who is he? How did he get his powers? Why haven’t the X-Men killed him? Let’s find out.

On the Origins of Evil: Mister Sinister’s Backstory

Val: “Bastion’s own Mengele.”
Sinister:I knew Mengele. He could have been so much more, but he settled on being a Nazi pup.

X-Men 97 “Tolerance is Extinction” (Season 1, Episode 8)

Mister Sinister debuted in The Uncanny X-Men #213 in 1987. He was created by Chris Claremont, who planned for the character to be a psychic child from Cyclops’ past. The kid would have used Sinister as an avatar and Claremont based the design on what would be scary to a child. Revisions made Mister Sinister into a superpowered Josef Mengele.

Nathaniel Essex was a eugenicist living in Victorian London. He discovered that Mutants existed and planned a society based on exploiting their cells to enhance humanity. Essex was called a madman and his wife declared him sinister after finding him digging up their son’s grave for a gene sample.

Essex met a Mutant called Apocalypse, who transformed him into an immortal with control over every cell in his body. Essex took his wife’s insult to heart and became Mister Sinister, Seneschal to Apocalypse. He served the warlord for years before betraying his master because Apocalypse’s slaughter of weak Mutants was wasting test subjects.

Mister Sinister travelled across Earth, stealing genetic samples of powerful Mutants. He assisted Mengele in Auschwitz, offering candy in exchange for blood samples. Magneto was sure that he was a vampire. Mister Sinister discovered Cyclops in an orphanage and became obsessed with his bloodline, which had godlike potential.

Mysteries and Massacres: Mister Sinister’s History

Mister Sinister:Ladybird, ladybird, fly away home. Your house is on fire. And your child, long gone.”

X-Men 97 “Fire Made Flesh” (Season 1, Episode 3)

Mister Sinister learned of a Mutant collective called The Morlocks living under New York City. He decided their mutations would weaken the species and manipulated Gambit into forming a team that committed genocide against the Morlocks. That massacre brought him to the X-Men’s attention.

Operating in the open allowed Mister Sinister to ramp up his experiments. He created a clone of Phoenix named Madelynn Pryor and tricked the X-Men into thinking she was the real Jean Grey. Essex also revealed that Cyclops had an unknown brother, leading to many false leads as he strung the hero along.

Dominion: Mister Sinister’s Modern Stories

[Mr. Sinister reawakens from psychic surgery]
Mister Sinister:
There you are, you beautiful bastard! It’s a wonder what a cocktail of Deadpool scrapings, a sample of Oscar Wilde, and five choice seasons of Drag Race will do for a chap! I always imagine people’s faces when I say that last bit. Of course Oscar Wilde was a Mutant.”

Immortal X-Men #4

Mister Sinister used endless clones and secret laboratories to survive run-ins with the X-Men. When they formed a Mutant nation, they invited him to join because it was too risky leaving Mister Sinister to his own devices. He used that opportunity to reinvent himself as a sassy ‘devil you know’ who seemed less dangerous.

While serving Krakoa, Mister Sinister learned that he had three clone siblings who had been seeking different forms of power for centuries. Mister Sinister waged a shadow war against them, stealing their knowledge and powers to become a godlike Dominion. He was on the verge of success when he discovered that Nathaniel Essex had beaten him to the punch.

You read that right. The Victorian eugenicist had uploaded his mind into a computer and studied post-human mechanics to become a Dominion called Enigma. He created the Sinister series to unknowingly feed him their discoveries. Chat GodPT, you might call him. Enigma was destroyed by The Phoenix Force, ruining Mister Sinister’s centuries of work.

Weird Science: Mister Sinister’s Powers and Personality

Mister Sinister:You haven’t understood at all. You can’t kill me. There is no “me”. Sinister is a system. Everything is Sinister. And if you’re not Sinister, your time is over.

Uncanny X-Men: Regenesis

Mister Sinister upgrades his body with stolen DNA to give himself new powers. His preferred set makes him a telepath, telekinetic, shapeshifter, and immortal. Mister Sinister has several failsafes to clone himself when he’s killed.

The Sinister Systems explored different paths to post-humanity. Club-suited Doctor Stasis studied humans who had gained powers and wanted to exterminate Mutants. Spade-bearer Orbis Stellaris is an interstellar arms dealer. Mother Righteous is a clone of Essex’s wife with the heart suit, studying magic and forming political connections. Diamond-marked Mister Sinister exploited Mutants. All of their knowledge empowered Enigma, the crown-suited Dominion.

Mister Sinister is a ruthless sadist obsessed with advancing his knowledge. Sinister alters his brain as necessary to further his goals. Professor X confirmed that Sinister’s mind is an empty shell, but he doesn’t care as long as that benefits him.
