YOUR’E NEXT
Main Cast: Emonjay Brown, Trinity Alyse
Director: Sebastian Dove
Okay, this one’s on me. I was being lazy. I was perusing the horror movies on the Roku channel, I saw another found footage movie—that scores a point—and it was only an hour long—another point. But it was called GHOST WEBCAM. I should have known better.
In this 2023 travesty, Nick is on house arrest so decides to get on a webchat with a possible hookup, Mia. While chatting, the conversation somehow turns toward ghosts and Mia directs him to a website called ghostwebcam.com which is supposed to be a livestream from a real haunted house.
Then Mia thinks she hears something in her apartment. Insisting she lives alone, she gets up, disappears from frame, and Nick jumps to the conclusion, with absolutely NO evidence to suggest it, that she’s been murdered. Then he watches words appear on the wall directly in front of Mia’s webcam:
MIA, followed by YOUR’E NEXT.
No, that’s not a typo. I clench my fists in rage.
From there, Nick enlists the help of his two best friends, Kate and Vick, to help him solve the mystery of this killer website, assuming that obviously it was the webcam that murdered Mia. They also get the guy who originally created the website years ago, who hasn’t run the site in a long time, and one by one everyone dies because I’ve got no problem spoiling this utter waste of an hour of my day. I could have been halfway through SMILE 2 instead!
Remember UNFRIENDED in 2014 and how great that was and how intelligently it used the webcam format to tell its story? Yeah, GHOST WEBCAM tried that almost a decade later and it looks like it was done twenty years earlier.
GHOST WEBCAM—I just want to keep saying it so the title is never far from your mind and if you see it on the Roku channel, or anywhere in the future, you’ll remember it and steer clear—was reportedly written and directed by Sebastian Dove who, surprisingly, has a few credits after this. Meaning someone somewhere trusted him with their money to make another movie. That is wild. Granted, with titles like DEATH WEB and JURASSIC EXPLORERS and OBSOLETE FUTURES, I’m pretty sure no one’s gonna be seeing those movies, either.
Emonjay Brown played Nick and his IMDB page says he is “an American actor.” Coulda fooled me. Same with Trinity Alyse as Kate, and don’t even get me started on Ariel Romeo Davis as Vick! I said in the last paragraph this movie was “reportedly written”, but that was hyperbole; it was obviously WRITTEN. And I get the feeling that Dove is one of those directors who insists the actors deliver the lines EXACTLY! AS! WRITTEN!!! And I also get the feeling he is a man who is convinced his words are gold every time.
You know how many writing instructors will say to read your words out loud so your ear can hear how they sound? If Sebastian Dove ever heard that advice, he scoffed and said, “Um, I’m good.” No, dude, you’re really not.
This movie hurts my feelings. If you ever, God forbid, see it on one of those 20 movies for $5 DVD sets, and you really want the other movies on there, but GHOST WEBCAM is still part of the set, take it to the register and haggle for a lower price.
I know it’s 2025 now and this movie was made a few years ago. You know what else came out in 2023? LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL, NO ONE WILL SAVE YOU, and WHEN EVIL LURKS. So don’t come at me with this bullshit. DO! BETTER!
Having said that, I’ve never made a movie, I’m sure it’s very difficult, so Mr. Sebastian Dove, I doff my cap and offer the slightest nod of acknowledgment for your efforts. But GHOST WEBCAM was still the bottom of the barrel.
Guess what? Sue found this streaming for free on YouTube in case you want to experience GHOST WEBCAM for yourself.
