Emmy-winning comedian and TV director Dick Martin died yesterday in Santa Monica, Calif. of respiratory failure, a family spokesman said. Martin acted in numerous shows, but was best known for Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In, the variety show he co-hosted with Dan Rowan. (If you’re too young to remember the show, you might still recognize Lily Tomlin or Goldie Hawn, whose careers were launched by the sketch revue, or the catchphrase “Sock it to me!”) After the show went off the air, Martin carved out a career as a TV director as well as playing supporting roles in many shows and films. He was 86 at the time of his death.
