Magik in a Young Girl’s Heart
Magik: “There are no snowflakes in Hell.”
Uncanny X-Men #18 (2012)
Demons have kidnapped several children. They huddle together in fear as the monsters debate who gets the tastiest victims. The leader grabs a little girl. Before he can bite her, a yellow disc appears next to his head. A golden blur flashes past the demon, and his head falls to the ground.
A woman in shining armor rises from a crouch, holding a golden sword bigger than she is. Three more demons are cut down effortlessly. The last uses a child as a human shield. Hatred fills the woman’s eyes and horns sprout from her forehead. She dashes at the demon and slashes. Her sword passes harmlessly through the child and slays the demon.
The woman sees fear on the children’s faces. She sees a blonde little girl standing with them and staring into her eyes. The girl is gone in a blink. Magik creates a portal and offers her hand to the nearest kid.
Magik is one of the most tragic X-Men. She was dragged through hell until she became its queen. So who is she? How did she get her powers? How low can she go? Let’s find out.

Snowflake: Magik’s Backstory
Magik: “Being angry is easy for me. Comfortable. But what’s underneath is hurt. So much hurt. I’m tired of hurting.”
New Mutants #28 (2022)
Magik debuted in Giant-Size X-Men #1 in 1975. She was created by Len Wein and David Cockrum, though Chris Claremont and Sal Buscema are the ones who made her a superhero eight years later.
Illyana Rasputina was a little girl who was almost killed by a runaway tractor. Her brother, Piotr, turned his skin into steel and destroyed it to save her. Professor X recruited Piotr for the X-Men. Illyana was soon kidnapped as bait for a trap. After being rescued, she also began attending Xavier’s School For Gifted Youngsters.
Danger was always around the corner. Illyana was attacked weekly and rescued by her brother Colossus and her best friend Shadowcat. A demon named Belasco managed to evade them and dragged Illyana into Limbo.
Illyana was forced to become Belasco’s apprentice. She studied black magic and fought demons daily for seven years. Belasco harvested pieces of her soul to forge Bloodstones, giving him more control over her. Illyana eventually rebelled and forged the remains of her soul into The Soulsword. She banished Belasco, became the Queen of Limbo, and returned to Earth minutes after her kidnapping.
Darkchylde: Magik’s History
Darkchylde: “I am The Darkchylde. Shut away from life. Always on the outside, looking in.”
New Mutants #73
Illyana joined The New Mutants as Magik. She kept her teammates at arms’ length and hid her sorcery, unaware that every spell she cast corrupted her. Magik’s costume manifested armor and she began killing villains. These were early manifestations of The Darkchylde, a demonic transformation fueled by her dark side.
She unleashed an army of demons to conquer the world. The X-Men fought The Darkchylde, but it was The New Mutants who got through to Illyana. They convinced her to suppress Darkchylde, banishing all the demons and sealing her away. Magik’s spell somehow reverted her to a child without her powers or memories.
Illyana’s second childhood ended in tragedy. She was patient zero of The Legacy Virus, a Mutant-targeting AIDS allegory. Illyana died from the disease, setting her brother Colossus on his own dark path. Belasco then put his revenge into motion, using the Bloodstones to resurrect The Darkchylde as his servant.
Darkness and Harmony: Magik’s Modern Stories
Darkchylde: “After all these years, your mental barriers are fully down. I have only one message for you, Illyana: I am you.”
Magik #5 (2025)
The Darkchylde masqueraded as Magik reborn, using the X-Men to further Belasco’s goals. She betrayed him, stealing the Bloodstones and reforging her Soulsword. Illyana was alive again, but corrupted by The Darkchylde’s influence and treated as a threat.
Magik was frustrated by the X-Men treating her as a victim, especially Colossus. She tricked him into stealing the Juggernaut’s power and ruining his life. Magik waited months to effortlessly break the curse. She wanted her brother to see her the way she saw herself, broken and damned.
While protecting Mutants from a supernatural threat, Magik’s exhaustion allowed The Darkchylde to break free and speak to her. Darkchylde revealed that she was Illyana’s dark side, but also a protective alter ego meant to shoulder the trauma she had endured. Magik had thought Darkchylde was pure evil and suppressed her. Accepting Darkchylde allowed Illyana to confront her trauma and emerge stronger.
Soulsword: Magik’s Power and Personality
Magik: You believe yourselves immune to death? I bring you a gospel of oblivion. I bring you the Soulsword. Taste it and cease to be.“
New Mutants #4 (2009)
Magik mixes sorcery, swordplay, and Mutant powers into a deadly warrior. She can teleport by creating portals called Stepping Discs. Magik’s spells are weakened on Earth, but godlike in Limbo, where she is the Sorcerer Supreme. Doctor Strange has her on the shortlist to succeed him.
The Soulsword is a giant blade made from Magik’s ravaged soul. It can cut through any spell, even divine magic if Illyana is in Limbo. The Soulsword only harms magical things and can only be wielded by the ruler of Limbo where it manifests magic armor to protect them.
Illyana was a kind child before being kidnapped. She emerged as a queen forged by pain and strength. Magik is cruel, aloof, and strangely repentant, often using one of those emotions to mask another. Embracing Darkchylde put Magik on a benevolent path as she strives to be more than a victim lashing out.
