Born in 1994, young Irish actress Saoirse Ronan vaulted from a few Irish television appearances to international fame with her acclaimed performance in Atonement. 13 years old at the time, she was nominated for dozens of awards for the role and was thrust into the Hollywood spotlight.
She has since continued making films, including The City of Ember and Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones, for which co-star Stanley Tucci was widely acclaimed. Saoirse is an Irish name, meaning freedom, which according to Wikipedia is pronounced something like seer-shə. Ronan, though born in New York City, moved back to Ireland with her parents at the age of 3. She currently resides in Ireland with her parents – her father is an actor and she is home schooled by her mother. At 16, she’s a rising star and one to watch.
