Casting/development roundup

— Roland Emmerich will direct a remake of the sci-fi thriller Fantastic Voyage. Emmerich’s Centropolis Entertainment partner Michael Wimer and James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment will produce the project for 20th Century Fox. The 1966 original, about five scientists who are miniaturized and injected into a dying man’s bloodstream, was directed by Richard Fleischer and starred Raquel Welch and Donald Pleasence.

— Jamie Foxx has agreed to star in a movie about a schizophrenic musician who forms a friendship with a newspaper columnist. The Dreamworks/SKG project is based on the true story of Nathaniel Anthony Ayers, who suffered a breakdown at age 20; Ayers lived on the street for 35 years before being “found” by Steve Lopez of the Los Angeles Times. Lopez’s book is scheduled for publication next spring; the movie will start shooting in January.

— Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston will co-star in Marley and Me, based on the memoir by John Grogan. Despite its name, the story has nothing to do with Dickens’ A Christmas Carol; instead, it’s about a couple who adopt a yellow Labrador dog to see what parenthood would be like, and get much more than they bargained for. David Frankel will direct the movie, which is scheduled to start shooting early next year.
